Alex Gordon drove in the lone run while Leo Nunez (2-2) was saddled with the loss for giving up six runs on 12 hits in 6 1/3 innings of work for the Royals, who were looking to sweep the Tigers for the first time since taking four straight against them from September 19-21, 2005.
Final Score: Tampa Bay 8, Baltimore 6
Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - B.J. Upton belted a three-run homer in the third, and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays twice battled back from deficits to top the Baltimore Orioles, 8-6, and sweep a three-game series. Nick Markakis and Kevin Millar homered for the Orioles, who have lost nine straight. Baltimore finished its 10-game homestand 1-9, the worst homestand in franchise history, sliding past the Orioles' 2-8 stand in 1987. Scott Kazmir (11-8) tossed a shaky five innings, but got the win for the D-Rays, allowing seven hits and five runs in five innings, fanning five and walking three. Final Score: Cleveland 6, Seattle 5
Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Kenny Lofton worked a bases loaded walk in the ninth inning to force home the game-winning run as the Cleveland Indians downed the Seattle Mariners, 6-5, at Jacobs Field. Eric O'Flaherty (7-1) started the inning on the mound and got the first out, but then gave up a single to Victor Martinez and hit Ryan Garko with a pitch before stepping off the mound for Rick White. Horacio Ramirez started on the mound and gave up three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings of work.
Final Score: Texas 5, Chicago 1
Arlington, TX (Sports Network) - Sammy Sosa homered and drove in two runs, and the Texas Rangers finished off a three-game sweep of Chicago with a 5-1 victory, sending the White Sox to their longest road losing streak in more than three decades. The defeat was Chicago's 16th in its last 19 games overall, and ninth straight on the road, its worst skid away from home since losing eight in a row in 2001. With a season already spiraling out of control, the setback came on a night the ChiSox committed four errors in one inning -- three by third baseman Andy Gonzalez -- and less than 24 hours after manager Ozzie Guillen's expletive- filled tirade directed at his players Wednesday night. The White Sox responded to Guillen's outburst by backing starter John Danks (6-13) with just one run, courtesy of Jim Thome's 495th career long ball. Danks, pitching against the team that originally drafted him, allowed seven hits and five runs -- just two earned -- while walking a batter and fanning eight over 5 2/3 innings. The Rangers, who have won a season-high five straight, countered with Kevin Millwood (9-11) who went seven strong for the win, yielding just one run and six hits, with a pair of walks and six strikeouts.
